Ottawa, November 13, 2018 – As institutions around the world mark International Education Week, there is a growing call for more young Canadians to experience learning abroad. The Study Group on Global Education, co-led by Margaret Biggs and Roland Paris, has shone a light on Canada’s need for a more strategic and ambitious approach to global education.

“In a world that is becoming more complex and more competitive, young Canadians will increasingly need 21st century skills,” says Margaret Biggs, the Matthews Fellow in Global Public Policy at Queen’s University. “These skills include problem-solving, being comfortable working with people from different backgrounds and knowledge of the world.”

“Global education fosters these skills,” adds Roland Paris, Professor of International Affairs in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. “There is a compelling national interest in significantly expanding the number and diver...

In December 1956, the foreign ministers of Canada, Italy, and Norway produced a report that made a number of bold recommendations about how NATO could—and should—become a genuine forum for political consultation and open discussion. In 2016, as Euro-Atlantic security is tested by a unique mix of challenges, from a fraught relationship with Russia to terrorism to cyberattacks, these proposals are as pertinent as they were sixty years ago.

Marking the 60th anniversary of the landmark Three Wise Men report, this event will gather 100 international diplomats, EU officials, think tank representatives, and media in Brussels to look at how transatlantic unity can be strengthened through greater nonmilitary cooperation within NATO. It will kick off with a keynote address by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, followed by a Q&A session moderated by Carneg...

At the “External Intervention in the Age of Global Transitions” conference, the participants will join GIGA researchers in discussing how states, international organisations, corporations, and civil society actors are reacting to – and shaping – the rapidly unfolding multipolar world order.

"A major architect of Trudeau’s foreign policy and adviser on the file, Roland Paris, moved back to University of Ottawa. He leaves his thumbprint on the portfolio after spending half a year as a senior adviser in the PMO on international affairs. Paris helped develop the Liberal Party’s foreign policy platform ahead of the 2015 election. He’ll be an interesting figure to watch as he re-enters the public speaking circuit." —iPolitics
